After a year of research, listening, and working with students and staff at Putney Central School, we're ready to bring to life the results of that work -- the Putney Tween Center.
The idea of a place for Putney "tweens" to go to after school emerged from the PCS student Developmental Asset Committee that met throughout the year. Further student surveys found that youth were ready for more opportunities for enrichment activities, physical activity, and ways to develop healthy eating habits.
While PFS has provided various programs for Middle School students with measured success, this latest endeavor is responding to the reality that "tweens" want a place away from school. Our space at Newman Hall on Old Depot Road lends itself to just such a project. Starting this September, Putney Tweens will be able to spend time after school to hang out, get a healthy snack, do homework or participate in one of our ongoing enrichment activities.
These exciting opportunities are lining up on the runway for take off: outdoor adventure activities from the High 5 Adventure programs, learning about other cultures in the Traveling Pants Culture Club, learning to make videos as youth seek to record some of the oral history of Putney, and ideas we haven't even though of yet – because we know once the creativity of Putney students is inspired, more ideas will emerge than we can keep track of. All of this – and more – will mark the start of this exciting endeavor to serve our youth.
We'll be kicking off this year's programs with a presentation for parents and students on Internet Safety at the Putney Public Library on Thursday, September 11 at 7pm. We'll be giving parents and students the latest on how to use the Internet safely and introduce The Putney Tween Center to one and all.
The Putney Tween Center is made possible by a start-up grant from the A.D. Henderson Foundation and is a collaboration of Putney Family Services and Putney Central School.
We look forward to seeing you soon and serving your children.
